Why is it that when you first decide – make a pledge – have the best intentions…something happens and you want to take back every hopeful thing you already said. When you savor food – you chew slowly, you try to get every last taste out of every last bite that you can. Well, today – I felt like I burnt my tongue today, stubbed my toe – I hate that! Is it time to change yet? OK, OK – I won’t give up savoring yet……….maybe.

OK…so just a few days ago – i was at a wonderful church, passing through the classroom portion. Now, I happen to look to my left and there I see (on florescent green paper) a label for one of the classrooms “Gamblers Anonymous”. Now it occurs to me that if people wanted to be anonymous, as they approached that classroom, they would see the sign, turn around and go home. I would – but I was too busy heading to the bible study where everyone knows your name – like the TV Show Cheer’s except..well, at church.

Bless their heart.

Remember, as a kid, how exciting everything “new” was?  New year, new school clothes, new grade, new game for your Atari, new cassette tape, new hairdo, new make-up.  Ever wonder how new is new?  Because this year really feels the same as last to me.  I’m the same person in a new job, new department, new car – but really it feels the same.  I like “new” there is something about it that gives a sense moving forward.  I like to move forward – I like to know where I am and where I am going.  At the same time - I get used to the “newness” and when things are familiar – something feels wrong, out of place, stagnant.  It’s here where I must remind myself that “new” is hard- and I need time to rest.  Familiar is not about staying the same but about savoring the moment.  I don’t savor very well – I’ve been too afraid I am going to miss something.  And I do – I miss what I have right now.  So today – I pledge that 2008 is the year of savoring.  I plan to enjoy, appreciate and think the best of my situation right now!  There will be no wishing my life away, no planning for the next thing – but drinking in every opportunity, moment and experience it in a way that only God intended.    It’s going to be a GREAT year.
